Signature 2 Day Tour: Fife Coast, St Andrews & The Trossachs
Day 1: Edinburgh to Pitlochry via Fife’s Coastal Villages
Departing from the capital city of Edinburgh, we travel over the Queensferry Crossing, opened in 2017 by Queen Elizabeth, 53 years after she opened its predecessor, the Forth Road Bridge.
We journey on to the delightful area of East Neuk, in the old Kingdom of Fife, (neuk being an old Scots word for nook). This stunning area comprises of some of the most picturesque villages and fishing ports in Scotland. We will visit the villages of Elie, then on to St Monans, which boasts historical buildings, including a 14th-century church.
Travelling along the breathtaking route offering both countryside and sea views, we stop off for a short visit to Pitenweem. This is the most active of the fishing ports in the East Neuk region, and has a fish market every morning. After a leisurely stroll around this quaint village, we head onward to Anstruther and Crail.
Both of these small towns are renowned in Scotland for their fantastic fish (and famous fish suppers). If you’re lucky, you might get the chance to sample the delicious fresh lobster or shellfish from Crail (a former Royal Burgh).
We then continue our journey to the iconic historic seaside town of St Andrews. This beautiful town not only boasts many golf courses, including the Old Course and British Golf Museum, but is home to Scotland’s oldest university, St Andrew’s University, founded in 1413 (where Prince William met his future wife Kate Middleton).
We shall stop at this beautiful town for you to enjoy some lunch before heading off to our overnight accommodation in Pitlochry. This stunning town is a popular beauty spot for tourists, as it is steeped in history, boasts enviable scenery, and offers fabulous forest walks, among other attractions.
Once we arrive here, you and your party will have some free time to explore the town, enjoying a meal at the many excellent eateries and maybe enjoying a wee dram or two at the welcoming local pubs.
Day 2: Pitlochry to Edinburgh via Loch Tay, Rob Roy’s Grave & The Trossachs
After enjoying a full Scottish breakfast, we depart the Victorian spa town of Pitlochry and travel alongside Loch Tay, Scotland’s fourth largest loch, with stunning mountain scenery reflecting in its tranquil waters. Have your camera ready as we continue through the breathtaking Trossachs landscape.
Our journey continues to the spectacular Falls of Dochart in Killin, where the River Dochart tumbles dramatically over ancient rocks within Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. We’ll continue to the peaceful hamlet of Balquhidder at the head of Loch Voil to visit the final resting place of Scotland’s legendary outlaw, Rob Roy MacGregor, whose gravestone sits in the atmospheric kirkyard.
Many visitors stop at Rob Roy’s grave, but few know about the hidden waterfall just a short 5-minute walk through the forest behind the church. This beautiful cascade was used as the dramatic escape route that Rob Roy used to evade soldiers searching for him, a scene featured in the film “Rob Roy,” starring Liam Neeson – a hidden gem that most tourists never discover.
Continuing through the Trossachs National Park, we pass the glistening waters of Loch Lubnaig with magnificent Ben Ledi towering above. Our next stop is the quaint hamlet of Kilmahog, where you’ll have the chance to meet and feed the famous hairy Highland coos at the Woolen Mill – Hamish, Honey Dubh, and Baxter. You can purchase bags of carrots and potatoes from the mill to feed them, making for a uniquely Scottish photo opportunity that’s always a tour highlight.
We’ll enjoy lunch at the Lion and Unicorn, established in 1635, in Thornhill – a welcoming local favourite, before making our way back towards Edinburgh. Time allowing, we can stop at either the magnificent Doune Castle (filming location for Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Game of Thrones, and Outlander) or the spectacular Kelpies, the world’s largest equine sculptures standing 30 metres tall.
Having had a full day of exploring Scotland’s natural beauty, legendary history, and unique Highland experiences, we return you to your Edinburgh accommodation with photographs and memories aplenty of your fabulous 2-day adventure with us.
